Brushing your teeth is an essential piece to maintaining good oral hygiene. Forming a routine in which you brush your teeth twice a day, preferably morning and night, and carefully flossing once a day is enough to keep the average patient in a healthy state. It is recommended that you spend about 2 minutes each time you brush. This allows you to spend the necessary amount of time on each individual tooth in order to make sure it is clean. Other recommendations we have for our patients are using a toothpaste with an ADA seal of approval that contains fluoride. Applying gentle pressure with a soft bristled toothbrush to 2-3 teeth at a time is a great technique. If you really want to step up your brushing game try out an electric toothbrush. They do most of the work for you so be careful not to brush to hard, this can lead to tissue recession and tooth sensitivity. Whether you use a manual toothbrush or an electric tooth brush, replace the brush about every 3-4 months or as the seasons change!
Don’t forget to brush the rest of your mouth as well! Your tongue can harbor a ton of bad bacteria causing bad breath and promote decay.
